Services
The Technology Services Division for the City is comprised of three (3) distinct disciplines. These include Application Development, Geographic Information System (GIS), and Network Management/Telecommunications.
Application Development is responsible for developing
programs to enhance the organizational efficiencies and effectiveness of city staff for the specific purpose of providing responsive and timely services for our citizenry. These applications are usually a “behind the scenes” type of programs that improve the flow of information among operational departments within the City. The most notable example that individuals can utilize on a day to day basis is the City Website. Santa Clarita’s website is updated on a daily basis, provides 24 hour a day, seven day a week access for residents to the City and is a significant tool in our continuing efforts to create a local government that transparent and readily accessible to our citizenry. During the 2007 Buckweed Fire, the City’s website was accessed by 50,000 unique visitors and experienced more then a quarter of one million page views……all in just one day!
The City’s Application Development staff has also been responsible for the development of several on-line tools that allow Santa Clarita to create a virtual City Hall experience for residents. These on-line tools include the City’s eService and eNotify Programs, ePermits and the City award winning Graffiti Tracking and Prevention System – eGraffiti
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was created in order to obtain geographic data about the City, for the purposes of map production and geographic analysis for the City. The GIS group creates and maintains a wide range of spatial data from zoning to bus routes to natural hazard areas. Access to accurate and current maps available is beneficial in assisting in property evaluation, parcel-related research, land-use planning, site selection, and environmental management. GIS primarily uses ESRI products such as ArcView 3.x, ArcGIS Desktop and ArcIMS Server. Electronic Field Study (EFS), better known as Pictometry, is also being utilized by the City for high resolution-oblique imagery viewing on desktop.
Network Management/Telecommunications is responsible for overseeing the hardware and software needs of the organization. The city's computer system consists of over 550 workstations, and over eleven remote sites interconnected to our central server room via the latest networking technology. In terms of managing the organization’s telecommunications the City is in the process of migrating to state of the art Cisco CallManager Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Cisco Unity systems while Centrex Lines link the smaller park sites to the City's phone system. For cellular services, the City primarily uses Sprint/Nextel and Verizon Wireless. For data, the City uses 11 point-to-point T-1 lines to connect all of its remote locations.
